Modi has put Gujarat on world map: Mukesh Ambani

AHMEDABAD : Reliance Industries Limited chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani praised Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi for putting Gujarat on the world map. "You have made India and Indians proud by putting Gujarat on the global map.

The world is taking note of Gujarat's model and your flawless execution. Gujarat is blessed to have an inspiring leader like you. All I can say is thank you," said Ambani at the second convocation of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) on Tuesday with Modi also present on the dais. Ambani president and chairman of PDPU.

Ambani addressed the students and said Gujarat needs to take more innovative steps in the energy sector. "Energy has the highest potential for doing good work today and technology will play an important role. Energy consumption in the world is projected to increase to 17 billion tonnes of crude oil equivalent by 2030. According to him, India and China would account for one third of global energy consumption. India needs to create six times the energy infrastructure it currently has, he said, adding there is tremendous promise in alternate energy like solar, biofuel and fuel cells.

Commenting on the opportunities in research, he told students, "I wish I was 25 years younger and in your place. It reminds me of a time when I felt all impossible things were possible. If an arid land in Jamnagar can be converted into the refining capital of the world and if a sleepy village in Gujarat can become the automotive hub of Asia, I feel anything can be done."

The event was also attended by veteran banker and new chairman of Infosys Limited, K V Kamath and chairman of Torrent Group Sudhir Mehta besides other experts from the energy sector.
As many as 409 under-graduate and post-graduate students of PDPU's constituent schools - School of Petroleum Technology, School of Petroleum Management and School of Nuclear Energy, were awarded degrees.

Modi, who was the chief guest at the convocation, said, "I would like to congratulate Mukesh Ambani for creating a gem like PDPU in Ahmedabad and contributing to the state's human resources. We do not want to see a world of robots, we want good human resources. Innovation and risk-taking abilities are the road to success." Modi also invited students to incubate at the state government's incubation initiative-icreate, which was launched two weeks ago.

Samsung to launch flexible smartphone Galaxy Skin

LONDON : A mobile phone with a screen that bends and can survive the hardest blows, even a strike from a hammer, might sound fairly futuristic, but you could soon own it.

In the first of its kind, Samsung is reportedly poised to release a revolutionary phone that will be so flexible that you can even roll it up.

According to International Business Times, Samsung's 'Galaxy Skin' -- unveiled as a concept earlier this year -- could be on sale as early as Spring 2012, reports the Daily Mail.
The phone will offer a high-resolution 800x480 flexible AMOLED screen, 8 megapixel camera and 1GB of RAM as well as a 1.2GHz processor.

The technology relies on atom-thick layers of 'graphene' sandwiched together, protecting a layer of liquid crystal 'screen'.

Phones using Graphene screens would be practically unbreakable, and offer an instant advantage over every other smartphone on the market. "AMOLED is already the mobile screen technology to beat, so if it's as good as promised, flexible AMOLED could put an end to smashed smartphone displays -- and tablets, which are even more fragile," Will Findlater, editor of Stuff magazine, told the Daily Mail.
"The potential for tablets that can fold to the size of a smartphone is especially exciting - you could have two gadgets for the price of one," he added. Samsung, however, has made no official announcement regarding the product.

Hong Kong student's Apple tribute is Internet hit

Photo Description : Jonathan Mak's self-designed logo in tribute of Apple founder Steve Jobs has become an Internet hit
HONG KONG — A Hong Kong design student said Friday he was overwhelmed and "flattered" after his sombre logo in tribute to Apple founder Steve Jobs caused a worldwide Internet sensation.

The design, featuring Jobs's silhouette incorporated into the bite of a white Apple logo on a black background, has gone viral on the Internet since news of his death.

"I feel so unreal," Jonathan Mak, a second year graphic design student at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, told AFP, after he was inundated with hundreds of emails and messages on his Twitter account.

The 19-year-old said he had received queries from newspapers in the United States and Germany about buying the copyright to use his logo and had been offered jobs after it spread like wildfire on the Internet.
"I am flattered by the attention but I would like to focus on my study before taking on any full-time job," said the bespectacled student, adding that he was trying to cope with his new-found fame.

"I'm quite busy now actually as I'm trying to finish a school project," he said.
When asked about whether he would be targeting commercial opportunities, Mak said he was considering contacting Apple on copyright issues because his design is based on Apple's own logo.

Some merchandisers have reportedly used his logo for commemorative memorabilia for Jobs such as t-shirts and caps that are being sold on the Internet.

"I will consider using any proceeds I make from the copyright for cancer research, as suggested by some people to me on the Internet," he said. Jobs died at 56 of pancreatic cancer.

Mak said he first came up with the design after Jobs announced his resignation in late August, but the logo received little attention at the time.

The teenager said the Apple founder had inspired him in his design.
"He was a minimalist, which is the way I would like to emphasise in my design -- fewer elements but a powerful message."

"Steve Jobs strongly believed in his own ideas and continued with his beliefs no matter how people criticised him. He was courageous," said Mak.
